Cats are an independent and eccentric species, but Humph takes it to the extreme. This free-thinking feline has a bizarre sense of humour and an appearance to match, with a scatterbrained imagination and a costume for every occasion. Whatever the situation, Humph has much to say, so maybe it's fortunate that he can't speak. All he really wants to do is sleep, eat, and read Marvel Comics.

Lately, Humph has found himself thrust into the role of space hero. While slow to adapt, he always does the right thing, especially if it involves protecting his boy, Matt... not that he won't complain about it or chicken out first.

His one weakness, apart from all his other weaknesses, is fish.

Fiction

One evening, as Humph was watching a space show with a glass of milk, Matt's parents told him to put the cat out for the night – out of their fourth floor window. Humph landed in a dustbin, and was disturbed when a robot mistook the dustbin for a probe, intending to take it away for inspection. Issue 5 After Matt followed him down after not hearing from him for five whole minutes, Humph poked his head out of the dustbin, and Matt demanded the robot give him his cat back, alerting it to his presence. Issue 6 Humph fled while the robot was distracted, but on second thought, headed back to rescue Matt... only to find the robot was beaming the boy up onto a star ship. Issue 7 Humph was also caught in the tractor beam and also taken aboard. Thinking happy thoughts of fish, Humph searched for Matt, unaware that an "intergalactic egg cup" he'd bumped into was a robot following behind him. Issue 8

Notes

  • Humph is named for, and partially based on, a cat that Mychailo Kazybrid once lived with, big feet and all. One time Humph broke his ribs![1][2]
  • The "Openers" section of The Transformers issue 9 advertised a pin-up of Humph for 89p posted, 5p of which would go to the Ethiopian famine fund. Humph also received a Fact File in issue 14. Both of these pages revealed that Humph's regular smock is blue, as Matt and the Cat was in black and white when Humph changed into a space suit.
