Department H, eh?

Canada is public knowledge. Its parliament buildings in Ottawa, Ontario? Sure, you've probably heard of them. You could deduce that they have a ministry of defence. What you won't have heard of is the top secret subsection codenamed Department H, buried five hundred metres below ground. And you'll surely have only heard whispers of its tame super-team, Alpha Flight.

Fiction

When the Hulk invaded Canadian territory, Department H dispatched Alpha Flight member Sasquatch to neutralise him. He apparently ended the Hulk's threat, though at the cost of vast tracks of Canadian timberland.

Some months later, parliament received an anonymous dossier that alleged that the Hulk had been deliberately sent into Canada by the living robot Machine Man on the orders of the U.S. government. A minister held a conference discussing the matter with Department H's top echelons, including its best cover operative, Agent K. As the Hulk had destroyed vast tracks of Canadian timberland on that occasion, it was felt that the U.S. government owed Canada explanation, if not compensation.

K was dispatched to New York City determine the veracity and origin of the dossier, while the Alpha Flight members Sasquatch, Northstar, and Aurora accompanied him to apprehend Machine Man. During a strategy meeting, K and the minister made it clear that they were operating without official sanction.

While the super-agents tried and failed to interrogate or capture Machine Man, K determined that the dossier was the work of Senator Miles Brickman, who wanted to boost his political profile by having the Canadian government join him in standing against the rascally robot. The scheme was outed to the news media, and Brickman's political campaign deflated under accusations that he was trying to have the Canadian government rig an American election. Alone Against Alpha Flight!

  • The idea that a secret branch of the Canadian government removed an American elected official from power by planting rumours that he was trying to rig an election by influencing a foreign government gets more ironic the more you think about it.
