Carnes was a criminal held in Alcatraz.
Fiction
In 1946, Joseph Cretzer led a mutiny against the guards of Alcatraz alongside Coy, Thompson, and Carnes. Objectives of their escape plan included freeing Hubbard and Shockley from their cells, as well as bargaining hostages for their freedom – though the two warders they had hostage were killed in the struggle.
The prison authorities called in troops as reinforcements for the siege, with a warden telling them to blow up the whole wing of the prison if necessary. After three days of being holed up, the mutineers' bolthole was breached by the troops.
Thompson, Shockley, and Carnes were tried in court; the jury found them guilty of murdering two warders, of taking part in a mutiny, of wounding several policemen, and of destroying federal premises. Judge Goodman sentenced Thompson and Shockley to execution by gas chamber, and Carnes to life imprisonment. The other two men glowered at him as Shockley told the "Indian" that he'd managed to save his own skin. The Truth About Alcatraz!
Notes
- Though not explained in the comic, Clarence Carnes got a lighter sentence than the other two men as he had not directly participated in the murders of the officers.
