Edward Atheling was in the running to become King of England.

Fiction

After Edward the Confessor died early into 1066, Edward Atheling was one of three possible candidates to become the next king, on account of his royal blood. The Battle of Hastings – The True Story.

Notes

  • "Edward Atheling" is actually Edgar Ætheling. He was Edward the Confessor's great-nephew, and the title "ætheling" denoted that he was a prince eligible for the throne. The flagging up of his "royal blood" is unusual given that William was Edward's cousin.
  • In real life, Edgar was passed over in favour of Harold since he was only an early teenager in 1066 and thus deemed unfit by the witan to be a leader. After Harold was killed, the witen elected Edgar to be king, but he didn't get as far as being crowned before William was.
