Fiction
Harold was once captured by the Earl of Ponthieu. When William, Duke of Normandy paid the ransom, Harold promised that, should Edward the Confessor die, he super duper wouldn't take the crown to become the next king.
Suffice it to say, William wasn't impressed when, in 1066, Edward the Confessor died and Harold became the next king. The Battle of Hastings – The True Story.
Notes
- Rather than the "Earl of Ponthieu", Harold was captured by Guy I, Count of Ponthieu, in 1064.
