Billy and his mother lived on Alcatraz island, as family members of one of the prison's fifty warders. He doesn't look pleased about it.
Fiction
Some time between 1934 and 1963, Billy and his mother lived on the smaller half of Alcatraz island that was unoccupied by prison buildings. Inhabitants like Billy could commute to San Francisco via a motor boat, which operated about a dozen times daily.
On one occasion, Billy's mother chided the tired-looking boy that he would be late for school if he didn't catch the boat on time. The Truth About Alcatraz!
